Theodor von Grotthuss Laboratory receives 2023 EuChemS Historical Landmarks Award
Jun 10, 2025
The European Chemical Society has awarded the 2023 Historical Landmarks Award to the Theodor von Grotthuss Laboratory in Gedučiai, near Žeimelis, Lithuania.
This recognition celebrates the groundbreaking work of Theodor von Grotthuss, who in 1805 developed the first theory of electrolysis, now known as the Grotthuss mechanism, and later proposed the first law of photochemistry in 1817. His discoveries laid the foundation for modern electrochemistry and photochemistry, influencing generations of scientists.
To commemorate the award, a memorial plaque unveiling ceremony was held on 7 June 2025 in Vienybės Square, Žeimelis. The event featured remarks by Saulius Margis, Mayor of Pakruojis District; Floris Rutjes, EuChemS Vice President; Almira Ramanvičienė, Chair of the Lithuanian Chemical Society; and Richard Compton of the University of Oxford. Following the speeches, the commemorative plaque was formally unveiled, marking the site’s historical significance in the development of chemical science.
EuChemS warmly thanks the local organisers and everyone involved for hosting this meaningful ceremony and for their efforts in preserving and celebrating Grotthuss’s scientific legacy.
