Magnus J. Johansson receives the 2024 EuChemS Industry Innovation Award

Dec 10, 2025

EuChemS is pleased to announce that Magnus J. Johansson, Senior Principal Scientist in Early CVRM Medicinal Chemistry at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, has been selected as the 2024 EuChemS Industry Innovation Awardee.

The Award recognises outstanding achievements by researchers or teams working in industrial chemistry, including collaborations with academia and research institutes. Magnus Johansson stands out for his leadership in precision catalysis and sustainable medicinal chemistry, integrating green-chemistry principles, PMI targets, solvent optimisation, and life-cycle assessment, into the heart of drug-discovery workflows. His expertise spans transition-metal catalysis, C–H activation, photoredox chemistry, biocatalysis, and predictive approaches to late-stage diversification.

Educated in Sweden (MSc, University of Gothenburg; PhD, Chalmers) with research experience at UC Berkeley and Harvard University, he now leads global synthesis strategy at AstraZeneca. Magnus Johansson mentors early-career scientists, serves as Docent at Stockholm University, and maintains active collaborations with universities in Sweden and abroad. He also contributes to the wider chemical community through roles on the boards of SAFECHEM and the Swedish Chemical Society (Organic Chemistry Division).

EuChemS congratulates Magnus J. Johansson on this prestigious recognition.
