Meet Floris Rutjes, EuChemS new President

Professor Floris Rutjes started his mandate as EuChemS President. He will remain President for a period of three years (i.e., from 1 January 2021 until 31 December 2023).

He has served the scientific community as Vice-President of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society‘s (KNCV) and as Vice-Dean and Professor at Radboud University in the Netherlands. Professor Floris Rutjes research interests focus on the synthesis of organic molecules, especially on the developement of new and sustainable (catalytic) synthesis methodology, the design and synthesis of biologically active small molecules, new click-probes for bio-orthogonal conjugation, and continuous flow chemistry in microreactor systems.

In 2002, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the KNCV. He also received the AstraZeneca Award for Research in Organic Chemistry in 2003.

Representatives of EuChemS Member Societies and Supporting Members voted on 3 October 2019 during the General Assembly in Bucharest, Romania, for Professor Floris Rutjes to be the next President of EuChemS. During his presentation at the General Assembly, Floris laid out his vision for the coming years and highlighted his wish to ensure EuChemS was even better known to its community, and ever more invaluable in today’s Europe.

He succeeds Professor Pilar Goya, from the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), who is now EuChemS Vice-President.
