{"id":9207,"date":"2021-05-17T08:43:21","date_gmt":"2021-05-17T07:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=9207"},"modified":"2021-05-17T15:15:37","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T14:15:37","slug":"e171-titanium-dioxide-no-longer-safe-efsa-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/e171-titanium-dioxide-no-longer-safe-efsa-says\/","title":{"rendered":"E171 (titanium dioxide) no longer safe, EFSA says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 6 May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFSA<\/a>) published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/6585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> probing the risks of the toxicity of titanium dioxide \u2013 also known as food additive E171. The European Commission requested this evaluation in March 2020, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/4545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evaluation conducted in 2016 <\/a>lacked substantial data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When used as a food colouring, this additive gives vibrancy and texture to many colourless industrial products. E171 could be found in processed food such as sandwiches, bakery wares or soups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main risk highlighted by EFSA is genotoxicity, more precisely strand breaks and chromosomal damage (mutations are not included).
