{"id":5552,"date":"2019-04-15T08:57:06","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T07:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=5552"},"modified":"2019-04-15T08:57:06","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T07:57:06","slug":"horizon-europe-political-agreement-reached","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/horizon-europe-political-agreement-reached\/","title":{"rendered":"Horizon Europe: political agreement reached"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A political agreement on the EU\u2019s next research and development programme, Horizon Europe, has been reached between negotiators for the European Parliament and national governments following several weeks negotiations and of deadlock over a range of issues.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary agreement was welcomed by Commissioner Carlos Moedas as putting the EU \u201con track to launch the most ambitious ever European research and innovation programme\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchresearch.com\/news\/article\/?articleId=1380708\">reports Research Europe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The agreement will still need to be approved by the European Parliament as a whole, with the vote due on 17 April. However, any debate over the budget has not yet taken place as this is inherently tied to wider negotiations of the overall EU budget for the years 2021 \u2013 2027, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebusiness.net\/framework-programmes\/news\/horizon-europe-sign-sends-signal-eu-budget-negotiators-says-moedas\">unlikely to happen before the end of 2019 at the earliest.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The agreement also revealed policymakers\u2019 vision for \u2018Missions\u2019 in the next programme. The five mission areas (under which specific missions could fall) include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adapting to climate change, including societal transformation<\/li>\n<li>Cancer<\/li>\n<li>Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters<\/li>\n<li>Climate-neutral smart cities<\/li>\n<li>Soil health and food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several partnerships will also be developed. See the full list <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebusiness.net\/framework-programmes\/news\/eu-council-and-parliament-strike-deal-horizon-research-programme\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2018, EuChemS published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/EuChemS-Position-Paper-and-amendments-for-Horizon-Europe.pdf\">position paper<\/a> together with amendments on the European Parliament\u2019s proposal for Horizon Europe.
