{"id":4352,"date":"2018-04-13T13:10:33","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T12:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=4352"},"modified":"2018-04-13T13:10:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-13T12:10:33","slug":"the-not-so-innocent-rubber-duck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/the-not-so-innocent-rubber-duck\/","title":{"rendered":"The not so innocent rubber duck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, ETH Zurich and the University of Illinois, found that \u2018\u2019potentially pathogenic bacteria\u2019\u2019 could be found inside rubber ducks, The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/mar\/28\/danger-a-mucky-rubber-ducky-is-a-haven-for-bacteria-says-study\">reports<\/a>. The study points to low quality polymers in the plastic ducks as providing nutrients for the bacteria, of which Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were also found \u2013 posing a serious risk to children\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>With World Health Day, held under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO) just a few days ago, we can take stock of the multitude of areas in which chemistry is playing a vital role in improving health conditions. EuCheMS took the opportunity to focus once more on the role <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TFAresponseEuCheMS.pdf\">of Trans Fatty Acids<\/a> in our diet as well as the continued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/policy-and-communication\/policy-workshops\/solving-antibiotic-resistance\/\">danger of antibiotic resistance<\/a>.
