{"id":3573,"date":"2017-11-17T11:45:07","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T10:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=3573"},"modified":"2017-11-17T11:45:07","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T10:45:07","slug":"european-antibiotic-awareness-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/european-antibiotic-awareness-day\/","title":{"rendered":"European Antibiotic Awareness Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the 10<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of the European Antibiotic Awareness day, on 15 November, Vytenis Andriukaitis, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, and Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation made a joint statement on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a threat that by 2050 \u201ccould potentially kill one person every three seconds and become a more common cause of death than cancer\u201d. In order to address this issue, the EU has created an action plan with three main objectives: 1)<strong> Making the EU a best practice region;<\/strong> 2) <strong>Boosting research and innovation; <\/strong>and 3) <strong>Shaping the global agenda<\/strong>. In more concrete terms, this June, the Commission adopted <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/newsroom\/sante\/newsletter-specific-archive-issue.cfm?newsletter_service_id=327&amp;newsletter_issue_id=4254&amp;page=2&amp;fullDate=Thu%2029%20Jun%202017&amp;lang=default\">EU Guidelines on the prudent use of antimicrobials in human health<\/a>; in September was launched the European Joint Action on Antimicrobial Resistance and HealthCare-Associated Infections (<a href=\"https:\/\/eu-jamrai.sciencesconf.org\/\">EUJAMRAI<\/a>), involving 28 countries; and in October, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecdc.europa.eu\/en\">ECDC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/\">EFSA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/ema\/\">EMA<\/a> adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/press\/news\/171026\">Scientific Opinion setting out indicators<\/a> that address both the human and animal sectors so that the EU and Member States can measure progress. On research, investment will continue under <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research\/participants\/data\/ref\/h2020\/wp\/2018-2020\/main\/h2020-wp1820-health_en.pdf\">Horizon 2020<\/a> where until now, projects with a cumulative budget of \u20ac350 million are funded and additional \u20ac200 million has been committed to AMR for the next three years.
