{"id":17962,"date":"2022-12-15T15:09:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T14:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=17962"},"modified":"2022-12-15T16:55:59","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T15:55:59","slug":"safe-and-sustainable-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/safe-and-sustainable-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission adopts \u201cSafe and Sustainable by design\u201d guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">On 8 December, the European Commission adopted a safety and sustainability assessment <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2022-12\/Commission%20recommendation%20-%20establishing%20a%20European%20assessment%20framework%20for%20safe%20and%20sustainable%20by%20design.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommendation<\/a> created by the High Level Roundtable on the Implementation of the Sustainable Chemicals Strategy \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/communication\/chemicals-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of which EuChemS<\/a> is an active member of.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The recommendation, titled \u201cEstablishing a European assessment framework for \u2018safe and sustainable by design\u2019 chemicals and materials\u201d primarily focuses on health and environmental protection from hazardous materials. It lays down a framework to be used in Research and Development, which is expected to define a \u201csafe and sustainable by design\u201d criteria, that will guide consumer and food contact producers amongst others to ensure the safety of their products. Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel and Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginijus\u00a0Sinkevi\u010dius both positively commented on the Commission\u2019s adoption.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The document considers the aims of major EU strategies and frameworks such as the Green Deal and the Sustainable Finance Strategy to connect the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability with them, while also linking it with already existing policy frameworks related to chemistry, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) programme.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The High Level Roundtable on the Implementation of the Sustainable Chemicals Strategy was set up by the Directorate General for Environment of the European Commission. EuChemS was invited to participate in the roundtable in 2021.
