{"id":14654,"date":"2022-05-13T10:50:18","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T09:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/?p=14654"},"modified":"2022-05-13T11:38:03","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T10:38:03","slug":"chemical-weapons-convention-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euchems.eu\/newsletters\/chemical-weapons-convention-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemical Weapons Convention came into force 25 years ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">29 April marks the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) \u2013 on this occasion, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) called all CWC members and signatories \u2013 including EuChemS \u2013 to reaffirm their commitment to make the world free of chemical weaponry. Major international and European institutions acknowledged the anniversary and emphasised the importance of the convention, including, but not limited to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2022\/04\/29\/chemical-weapons-convention-declaration-by-the-high-representative-on-behalf-of-the-european-union-to-mark-the-25th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Council<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/25th-anniversary-entry-force-convention-prohibition-development-production-stockpiling-and-use_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EEEA<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2022-04-29\/secretary-generals-message-the-25th-anniversary-of-the-entry-force-of-the-chemical-weapons-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations<\/a>. EuChemS also expressed its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuChemS\/status\/1519930774908129282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support<\/a> of CWC. The extensive list of those who reiterated their support can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/events\/1520078228165206022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Since its entry into force in 1997, the CWC made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opcw.org\/media-centre\/opcw-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant strides<\/a> towards chemical weapon disarmament: 193 states are participants, making 98% of the world population safe from chemical weapons. Under the aegis of the convention, 99% of chemical weapons stockpiles and 74 out of 97 declared production facilities were destroyed. 23 other sites were converted for peaceful purposes.
