[Almade\u0301n] EUCHEMS HISTORICAL LANDMARKS AWARD PLAQUE UNVEILED AT ALMAD\u00e9N MINES, SPAIN After postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had the pleasure of travelling to Almad\u00e9n (Spain) on 14 and 15 September 2021, where the mines have been awarded the 2019 EuChemS Historical Landmark (European level). The ceremony was preceded by a symposium on the history of the mines and the element mercury. From EuChemS, Floris Rutjes, President, Pilar Goya, Vice-President and Nineta Hrastelj, Secretary General, attended the unveiling of the plaque in Almad\u00e9n. Read the full article here [5]. MEET THE RECIPIENTS OF THE 2022 EUROPEAN CHEMISTRY GOLD MEDAL AND THE 2020 EUCHEMS LECTURE AWARD We are pleased to announce that the 2022 European Chemistry Gold Medal has been awarded to Professor Dame Carol Robinson and that Professor Victor\u00a0Mougel\u00a0is the recipient of the 2020 EuChemS Lecture Award. On behalf of all of us at EuChemS: congratulations! [WiFo] EUCHEMS @ #WIFO 2021\ufeff From 29 August to 1 September, EuChemS had the pleasure to join the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry (WiFo) as an exhibitor which was for the first time organised entirely online. GDCh President, Professor Dr. Peter R. Schreiner, welcomed the participants during the WiFo Opening Ceremony on 29 August and presented the\u00a0programme\u00a0of the Congress, together with Professor Dr. Peter Gartner, President of the Austrian Chemical Society (G\u00d6CH). State of the Union 2021: the EU tested by COVID-19 On 15 September 2021, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, conducted her yearly speech \u201cState of the Union\u201d in a plenary at the European Parliament. President von der Leyen presented a summary of the past year and started by congratulating Europe for its efforts in fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Read more about it here [8]. [CoFoE] CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF EUROPE DIVIDES EU SCIENTIST Since the launch of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), discussions\u00a0arose\u00a0within the European scientific community on the omission of some leading topics\u00a0within its\u00a0programme. This joint initiative of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union,\u00a0and European Commission aims at stimulating citizens to participate in shaping Europe\u2019s future through a free, multilingual,\u00a0and digital platform \u2013 designed as the \u201chub\u201d of the conference \u2013 and various in-person and on-line events\u00a0organised\u00a0everywhere across the EU. MEPS AGAINST HORIZON EUROPE BUDGET CUT On 2 September 2021, the Members of the European Parliament of the Industry, Technology, Research and Energy (ITRE) committee gathered to discuss the 2022 general EU budget. Special focus was\u00a0given to\u00a0the budget cut of \u20ac316 million for the Horizon Europe\u00a0programme\u00a0proposed by the European Council last July. On 15 July 2021, against all expectations, the European Council decided to reduce the budget for 2022 of\u00a0the\u00a0Horizon Europe\u00a0programme\u00a0by \u20ac316 million. At the same time, the instruments\u00a0Digital Europe\u00a0(digital technology\u00a0programme) and\u00a0InvestEU\u00a0(facilitating investment\u00a0programme) will also see their budget cut by \u20ac50 million and \u20ac45.5 million respectively. The main argument of the European Council was that there was not enough demand to invest in this domain. Read more about it here [10]. [glyphosate] UPCOMING PARALLEL CONSULTATIONS FROM EFSA AND ECHA ON GLYPHOSATE The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will open parallel consultations on the Renewal Assessment Report (RAR) and the\u00a0Harmonised\u00a0Classification and Labelling (CLH)\u00a0report on glyphosate by 24\u00a0September.\u00a0This step is part of the renewal process of the glyphosate which ends at the term of its\u00a0authorisation\u00a0in December 2022. The draft Renewal Assessment Report (dRAR) was published on 15 June by the Assessment Group of Glyphosate (AGG) and concluded\u00a0that\u00a0there was a risk\u00a0of causing\u00a0\u201cserious eye damage\u201d and\u00a0being\u00a0\u201ctoxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects''.
