The last weeks saw some exciting new developments including the much-anticipated unveiling of the first EuChemS Historical Landmark plaque at the Ytterby mine in Sweden. At the policy level, the European Commission has started planning Horizon Europe, the next EU research framework programme that will take the mantle from Horizon 2020. The plans will in addition shed additional light on the proposed \u2018Missions\u2019 within the programme and offer an opportunity for stakeholders to have a say on how the budget should be spent. [1] [58383254_2138908252813246_2051913281269923840_n] EuChemS Historical Landmarks plaque unveiled at Ytterby mine, Sweden Famous for being linked to the discovery site of some eight chemical elements, Ytterby mine, deep in the Stockholm archipelago, celebrated the unveiling of the first EuChemS Historical Landmarks Award plaque in recognition of the role it played in the history of Chemistry and shared European cultural heritage. [2] EuChemS weighs in on debate over the future of scholarly communications An expert group, set up to support the policy development of the European Commission on Open Science, published in January 2019 a report on the \u2018Future of scholarly publishing and scholarly communication\u2019. [3] [finnish100] THE FINNISH CHEMICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES ITS 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY On 26 April, the Finnish Chemical Society met in Helsinki to celebrate its 100-year anniversary where EuChemS President Pilar Goya joined the celebrations.\u00a0 [4] EUROPEAN COMMISSION BEGINS PLANNING FOR HORIZON EUROPE Planning for the implementation of the 9th research framework programme, Horizon Europe, officially began early May with a meeting of the shadow programme committee, responsible for supervising the preparation of the implementation plan. [6] Mauro Ferrari, leading nanoscientist, appointed next President of the European Research Council (ERC) The European Commission appointed on 14 May, Mauro Ferrari, an Italian nanoscientist known for his leadership role in the founding of the field of nanomedicine, as the next President of the European Research Council (ERC). He will take up his new role in January 2020 for a 4-year term of office, replacing the current President, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon. [organigram ec] EU Research and Development Directorate-General attempts to tackle bureaucratic functionning The European institutions have long been criticised for their bureaucracy and lengthy reaction time. The European Commission\u2019s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (referred to as DG RTD) is attempting to change that by approving a new \u201cmatrix\u201d design and structure for their administration. [7] [ectng] EuChemS attends ECTN General Assembly in Krakow EuChemS was once again pleased to have been able to attend the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTN) General Assembly in Krakow, Poland in April. Discussions focused on the recent developments regarding the Eurolabels\u00ae [8] as well as the EChemTest\u00ae [9]. Collaboration between EuChemS and ECTN is also set to continue, notably with the next joint project for the Employment Survey of European Chemists. EFSA CONSULTATION ON THE ACTIVE SUBSTANCE GARLIC EXTRACT The European Food Safety Agency has launched a public consultation on its assessment report on the active substance Garlic extract [10].
