Welcome to the September edition of Brussels News Updates – your monthly overview of Chemistry in Europe, our activities, Chemistry events across Europe and more! This August, the Chemistry community made its way to the lively city of Liverpool, UK, for our 7th EuChemS Chemistry Congress! Surrounded by beautiful brick-built docks, Beatles tunes and traditional scouse, a line-up of outstanding speakers presented their latest research, students displayed their exceptional posters, and participants discussed, debated and networked throughout the busy week. The Congress in turn witnessed many novelties and important events: the launching of our new name, acronym, and logo; a series of awards, including the first European Chemistry Gold Medal, awarded to Professor Ben Feringa; the publishing of the EuChemS Position Paper on Horizon Europe; as well as the sight of thousands of chemists rock ‘n’ rolling to Twist and Shout… So scroll down to read all about the Congress and other news! [HORIZON EUROPE] EuChemS Position Paper on Horizon Europe EuChemS has published a Position Paper outlining our vision for the next research framework programme, Horizon Europe which will succeed the well known Horizon 2020 funding progamme. In our position we have called for a more ambitious budget, boosts to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and the European Research Council (ERC) budgets, have reiterated our support for excellent science, as well as the notion of ‘Missions’ put forward by the European Commission. Finally, EuChemS had emphasised the fact that science knows no borders, and that countries that have in the past participated in research framework programmes, should be able to do so again in Horizon Europe. Plan S launched On 4 September, a coalition of national research funders, with support from the European Commission launched ‘Plan S’, a commitment to accelerate the transition to open access in scientific publishing. The initiative was held under the backing of Science Europe and with the support of Robert-Jan Smits, the European Commission’s open access envoy. The initiative has the potential of fundamentally altering the scientific publishing landscape, as well as accelerating the transition to Open Science more generally. Read our full debrief here [3]. Drinking water, carbon dioxide emissions and medicine assessments: European Parliament updates The European Parliament had a busy week this September as they discussed and debated a number of highly important and relevant topics through plenaries and Committee meetings. Focus this time on tighter rules for safe drinking water, carbon dioxide emissions from cars, and enabling more efficient medicine assessments and accessibility. Click here for more [5]. Looking back at the 7th EuChemS Chemistry Congress On 26 August, close to 1500 participants came together in the city of Liverpool, UK, to share their enthusiasm and passion for the wide field of Chemistry. Over 5 days, an outstanding line-up of speakers shared their latest research and discoveries; students and early-career chemists displayed their findings and work through inspiring posters. And in between, people from different backgrounds, with different experiences, and from across the world, were able to network and create new bonds and find common ways forward. [goldmedal] EUCHEMS AWARDS AT THE EUCHEMS CHEMISTRY CONGRESS This year's EuChemS Congress witnessed the awarding of the European Chemistry Gold Medal to Professor Ben Feringa, as well as the EuChemS Award for Service 2018 to Professors Francesco De Angelis, Sergio Facchetti and Reiner Salzer. The oustanding work done by young chemists was celebrated with the European Young Chemist Award (EYCA), whilst the work of Professor Paul Dyson was rewarded with the European Sustainable Chemistry Award (ESCA), an award of the EuChemS Division of Green and Sustainable Chemistry and the EuChemS Division of Chemistry and the Environment.
